SVC Cars
SVC has 2 cars available for the use of volunteers during their project work.

SVC Car Drivers
In order to use the car we need a photocopy of both the drivers photocard and paper license and you need to have completed a practice drive with a member of staff.

SVC Car Booking
There are 2 car diaries in the office for pre-booking the car. The cars are booked on a first come first served basis although some projects do take priortiy. The diary is kept on the project workers desk; only people who have booked will be able to use the car. The keys may be obtained from the security desk on the production of your SVC identity card. The security desk is on the second floor next to reception.

Volunteer Owned Cars
As soon as you have been accepted as a volunteer driver, you should notify your insurance company in writing, (there is a standard letter in the SVC Office) that you will be doing volunteer driving. Failure to do so can invalidate your policy and make you liable for any damage or injury. Please speak to the SVC Manager before using your own car. You will normally be covered under your existing policy but occasionally companies might increase your premium.

Insurance
The vehicle must only be used for the specified purposes, as failure to do so could result in the insurance policy becoming invalid.

Travel Regulations
It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure:

  • While occupied and in use, all doors are to be kept closed but unlocked. The engine must be turned off and keys removed whenever the driver is not occupying the driver’s seat.
  • The car must never be left unattended except when parked safely with all doors and windows shut and locked manually. All windows must be clean before use and free from obstruction.
  • Safe places should always be found when shopping and/or parking especially when passengers need to get in or out.
  • All drivers of the vehicles used by that project must drive within the regulations as required by law. Any offences committed by the driver. i.e. exceeding the speed limit, driving without due care and attention, overloading etc, is the drivers responsibility and she/he is therefore liable to pay all fines and penalties incurred including car parking fines!
  • When taking charge of a vehicle the lights, oil, water, tyres and doors should be checked and a note made of any damages. Damages must be reported to the SVC Office immediately. Seat belts MUST be used at all times.

The car MUST have the following:

  • Consent form for each child
  • Directions to the child’s home and phone number
  • Directions to the venue and phone number

It is the responsibility of all volunteers to ensure the following:

  • Children must remain in their seats when the vehicle is moving.
  • Children must not open doors or lean out of windows while the vehicle is moving or in a potential dangerous place (e.g. on the verge of a road).
  • Children must understand that they are not to distract the driver’s attention at any time.
  • Drivers should not be included in name songs etc. although they can join in other songs if they wish!
  • Children under 16 are NOT allowed in the front seats.
  • There must be at least TWO volunteers in the car and children must have seat belts on. One volunteer must sit in the rear.
  • Minibuses must have a minimum of THREE volunteers (One seated next to side door and one by the rear door) and at least one volunteer for each two children.
